LETTER: County study views ignored

New Castle News

Editor, The News:

Considering what Mitchel Olszak and Ruth Ray wrote in recent items in The News, I am led to believe that they have believed that from day one that they were sure the Lawrence County Government Study Commission would surely recommend a change of government for Lawrence County.

Why? I think that they could not envision any other intelligent happening. It simply had to be.

But then John Russo resigned from the commission and the house of cards collapsed. Others on the commission tried to straighten that out by giving Russo new life on the commission, but that failed and they tried to blame the county commissioners for the event.

The commission meetings were open to the public and The News was invited to give its opinion on various matters to the members. It never did.

Only one member of the League of Women Voters, Elizabeth Verterano, appeared on several occasions and addressed comments to the commission, repeating ideas that have been given to an earlier study commission five years ago and which had been rejected by the vote of the county electorate.

One day, I went to the home of Ruth Ray, intending to show her a 43-page book which I had typed up, containing the result of my study of the county government. No one answered the door, so I went home and called her home phone.

I received an answer directing me to leave my name and phone number and a message, which I did.

I asked Ray to give a time and place where I could meet with her for the purpose of handing her said book and explain the content to her.

I never got a return call.
